Here are things I am learning…. Be rested, be focussed, be relaxed, be happy, stop if I start singing off pitch from practicing, drinking water takes 4 hours before it will lubricate vocal chords, being hydrated is beyond important for sliding up and down with pitches, warm up for 10 minutes, don’t push, know your range and stay in it as you expand, get a expensive guitar tuner and sing with it, making goal to be with in no more than 5 cents sharp or flat, study with tuner how to stop singing flat by smiling or sharp by not pushing too much air over the vocal chords possibly, ect. And give your self grace as some days you will be on and others maybe not as much. Maybe you talked a lot that day, are not hydrated, just not into it ect…. Be kind to yourself! It’s ok it’s not easy to sing. You have to study your body on how to get behind the notes and project them with everything working together. Your abdomen, your throat relaxed and open, hydrated, focussed, paying attention…. Understanding head voice and chest voice and working them to the point you can go back and forth with ease….. good luck! Singing is fun! And professional singers are not so close to perfect pitch. I have taken good tuner to speakers as they were singing and when singing with a band make sure you sound on right pitch with bass guitar. Anyhoo these are things I have learned over 30 years of trying to do this…😊

Yep. That's me. Sang soprano/2nd Soprano in choir but I have a lower talking voice. I haven't sung much for a while now except at home but I recently downloaded an app that would tell me my natural range. Turns out, I'm an alto. Prob partially why my throat hurts a lot when I sing.

Listen to “Driving Home for Christmas” it was recorded recently, 100% strait tone. You are right about the fact in higher registers she uses some air at the onset, but that’s been the case for a long time now.

Fun Fact: Brendan Graham, the lyricist of You Raise Me Up, was so moved by this Sohyang's performance so that he contacted her. He even contacted the Korean embassy to contact Sohyang. And he told Sohyang that 'You Raise Me Up' has been arranged in about 165,000 versions so far, and the version sung by Sohyang is the best version and is his favorite. He also gifted Sohyang some songs he had written. One of the singers who sang this song, Westlife's Shane Filan, also said that he got goosebumps all over his body after hearing Sohyang's version.

Word! Singing is a full body activity! When you think it's fun your throat you use neck tension. Activating you entire body gets them also involved!

I practiced doing an “Ah” sound while looking in the mirror earlier. I made sure to open my throat like the doctor wants to see my tonsils and held the note. I instantly felt like it worked some muscles really well in my diaphragm area. I was surprised by that lol

At the time of this performance, she thought this might well be her last one due to health issues. Just prior to marrying, she was found to have what was thought to be a benign growth. During surgery it was found to be much larger than thought and cancerous, so the operation resulted in her being unable to conceive. During the surgery, she needed a transfusion and that resulted in her contracting Hepatitis which then depressed her immune system and resulted in repeated respiratory infections like the one pneumomia she had days prior to this performance. She was released from the hospital, but told not to perform...she did so anyway. There is now an antiviral that keeps the Hepatitis at bay and has allowed her immune system to rebound resulting in improved health for her. I am so pleased at that as she is a gift to humanity and we need her singing for many more years.
